Unlike traditional gym equipment, characterized by clunky weight stacks and pulleys, our machines are air-driven. You push and pull against steady air pressure through every movement, which results in less stress and strain on joints and ligaments, and less chance of injury, while still providing an effective workout.
What’s more, because our equipment is computerized, your coach is able to program your workout in advance. When you show up, each machine greets you by name, sets your resistance, counts reps and adjusts your workouts, making them progressively more challenging as you improve. And every workout is recorded, so you – and your coach – will be able to see precisely how much you’ve advanced over time and what needs to be tweaked to keep your workout working for you.
By the way, we also feature low-impact cardio equipment to help you build energy and endurance. Featuring helpful displays, our machines are easy to operate. Our lineup includes a full-range of seated and stand-up options with beginner to advance exercises. Your coach will choose the machines that are best for you, and show you how to use them.

When you join, a coach reviews your health history and sets you up on a workout program designed to meet your goals and current health condition. That’s followed by three one-on-one workouts so that you’ll learn how to use each machine safely and correctly for best results.
Thereafter, expect ongoing supervision and guidance whenever you come into the club. And there are quarterly check-ins during which a coach reviews your progress and suggests tweaks to help you keep progressing.
We offer group cardio classes featuring “high intensity interval training” (also known as HIIT) to boost energy and build endurance. As the name suggests, HIIT is based on working hard for brief intervals, then slowing down for a short time to recover. Studies show that incorporating these hard/easy cycles into your cardio training will help you achieve more benefits in less time. We’re talking about everything from burning more calories and losing weight to strengthening your heart and managing your blood pressure. HIIT is also an ideal way to spice up your work-out routine and have fun. Class size is limited to ensure that our coach can properly guide and motivate you throughout the session. There may be an added cost for classes and members are asked to sign up in advance.
At most gyms you don’t want to hang out after exercising. Welcyon is different. Each club features a relaxing social area where you can read the newspaper and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. It’s also a great place to make friends. And there’s the added bonus of monthly educational workshops and special events. Sure, everyone wants to get stronger, but exercising at Welcyon is also about having fun.
We offer a variety of membership options, though most members commit to a 12-month agreement, both to save money and achieve life-changing results. Depending on your health insurance plan, you may be eligible for at least a partial reimbursement of your monthly dues.

Welcyon founders Tom and Suzy Boerboom recognized traditional gyms are not the answer for most folks 50 and over. As long-time healthcare executives, former health club owners and baby boomers themselves, they understood what their generation needs and wants – and so, along with partner Paul Contris, they set out to create “the best health club for adults over 50.”
The first clubs opened in the Minneapolis area in 2010 and the chain has since grown through franchising.
