FAQ's

Q:  How is Welcyon different than traditional gyms?
A:

Step inside a Welcyon and you will instantly know this is not the typical gym catering to uber fit 20-somethings and 30-somethings. Our clubs are specially designed for adults 50 and over.

We’re not 22 anymore, and we’re at a point in life where we want to prioritize our health, but in place more to our liking – with hands-on instruction and support; interactive user-friendly equipment that makes exercise easy yet effective; and a welcoming, non-intimidating environment that motivates us to come back again and again. That’s what Welcyon delivers.

Q:  What kind of results can I expect?
A:

A recent analysis shows that, on average, Welcyon members increase their strength by 56% in three months and double their strength within a year!

In addition, our clubs are filled with success stories of members who’ve used our structured but easy-to-follow exercise and nutrition approach to lose weight, lower their cholesterol and blood pressure, take control of their diabetes and achieve their best health in years.

They are proof that it’s never too late to regain strength and reverse a decline in your health – no matter your age.

Q:  I’ve never worked out before? Will I fit in at Welcyon?
A:

More than half our members either had never belonged to a health club or had not been in one for nearly a decade before joining Welcyon.

We’ve been compared to a modern-day “Cheers,” with fitness coaches who actually know you by name and a setting that makes you comfortable and at home. Our team sets you up for success with supervised workouts. Our equipment is easy to use and preprogrammed with your workout, so you never have to guess at what you should be doing.

Yes, you’ll fit in, and you’ll enjoy coming back again and again.

Q:  What sets your strength training equipment apart from other gyms?
A:

Our state-of-the-art equipment is safer, easier to use and is programmed with your prescribed workout, taking the guesswork out of exercise.

Unlike traditional gym equipment, characterized by clunky weight stacks and pulleys, our machines are air-driven. You push and pull against steady air pressure through every movement, which results in less stress and strain on joints and ligaments, and less chance of injury, while still providing an effective workout.

What’s more, because our equipment is computerized, your coach is able to program your workout in advance. When you show up, each machine greets you by name, sets your resistance, counts reps and adjusts your workouts, making them progressively more challenging as you improve. And every workout is recorded, so you – and your coach – will be able to see precisely how much you’ve advanced over time and what needs to be tweaked to keep your workout working for you.

By the way, we also feature low-impact cardio equipment to help you build energy and endurance. Featuring helpful displays, our machines are easy to operate. Our lineup includes a full-range of seated and stand-up options with beginner to advance exercises. Your coach will choose the machines that are best for you, and show you how to use them.

Q:  Why does Welcyon stress the importance of strength training?
A:

A. Studies show that without regular physical activity we lose about one percent of our muscle mass every year starting in our mid-30s, and the deterioration accelerates as we approach our 60s. So, it’s not unusual to have lost a quarter or more of our strength by then. That’s why we get weak, gain weight and become sicker than we should.

The good news is that this decline can be reversed through strength training, and getting stronger means you’ll stay active, enjoy a better quality of life – and make fewer visits to the doctor’s office!

Q:  Do you have personal trainers on staff and what is the cost?
A:

Supervised and personal attention from our specially trained fitness coaches is included in your membership, so there’s no need to pay extra for personal training.

When you join, a coach reviews your health history and sets you up on a workout program designed to meet your goals and current health condition. That’s followed by three one-on-one workouts so that you’ll learn how to use each machine safely and correctly for best results.

Thereafter, expect ongoing supervision and guidance whenever you come into the club. And there are quarterly check-ins during which a coach reviews your progress and suggests tweaks to help you keep progressing.

Q:  Do you have group classes?
A:

We offer group cardio classes featuring “high intensity interval training” (also known as HIIT) to boost energy and build endurance. As the name suggests, HIIT is based on working hard for brief intervals, then slowing down for a short time to recover. Studies show that incorporating these hard/easy cycles into your cardio training will help you achieve more benefits in less time. We’re talking about everything from burning more calories and losing weight to strengthening your heart and managing your blood pressure. HIIT is also an ideal way to spice up your work-out routine and have fun. Class size is limited to ensure that our coach can properly guide and motivate you throughout the session. There may be an added cost for classes and members are asked to sign up in advance.

Q:  What else does Welcyon offer with a membership?
A:

At most gyms you don’t want to hang out after exercising. Welcyon is different. Each club features a relaxing social area where you can read the newspaper and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. It’s also a great place to make friends. And there’s the added bonus of monthly educational workshops and special events. Sure, everyone wants to get stronger, but exercising at Welcyon is also about having fun.

Q:  What does Welcyon cost?
A:

We offer a variety of membership options, though most members commit to a 12-month agreement, both to save money and achieve life-changing results. Depending on your health insurance plan, you may be eligible for at least a partial reimbursement of your monthly dues.

Because pricing varies by location, for more details contact the club nearest you.

Q:  How did Welcyon come about?
A:

Welcyon founders Tom and Suzy Boerboom recognized traditional gyms are not the answer for most folks 50 and over. As long-time healthcare executives, former health club owners and baby boomers themselves, they understood what their generation needs and wants – and so, along with partner Paul Contris, they set out to create “the best health club for adults over 50.”

The first clubs opened in the Minneapolis area in 2010 and the chain has since grown through franchising.
