Welcyon’s Tom Boerboom Named to The (Real) Power 50; Recognized as “One Who Makes Things Happen”
EDINA, Minn. – Tom Boerboom, co-founder and president of Welcyon, Fitness After 50, has been selected to The (Real) Power 50 by Minnesota Business magazine.
The magazine describes The (Real) Power 50 as the linchpins in their company. The connectors in their industry. The people without whom the whole machine would tumble down. The heart of the operation. The ones who make things happen. The real decision-makers of the family.
“Being named to this list is an incredible recognition for which I am very proud,” said Boerboom, who will be showcased with the other honorees at an awards event on April 25, 2013. “The award recognizes not only the hard work and success I have enjoyed, but also the hard work and dedication provided by all those I have worked with throughout my career.”
Boerboom has had a long career in the health care business, spanning more than 35 years as an executive with various long-term care providers. Together with his wife, Suzy, he also owned six successful Curves franchises. That experience, coupled with several years of ruminating on the needs of fellow baby boomers, led them to create Welcyon, a Minneapolis-based franchise that operates fitness centers designed specifically for people age 50 and over.
Since 2009, Boerboom has continued to “make things happen.”
Welcyon has opened three gyms – two in suburban Minneapolis and one in Sioux Falls, South Dakota – and is seeking to open as many as 20 franchised locations over the next 12 months. The company’s long-term goal is to have 1 million members, a realistic aim when you consider some 70 million Americans will be 65 or older by 2030.
Founded in 2009 by Paul Contris, and Tom and Suzy Boerboom, former health club owners and long-time experts in the field of active aging, Welcyon, Fitness After 50 is an up-and-coming franchisor of health clubs for adults over 50. The company has carved a niche in the $21 billion health club industry with a concept that caters specifically to the exploding Baby Boomer market and its desire for healthier and more active lives. Based in Minneapolis, Welcyon has locations in Minnesota and South Dakota, and is expanding nationwide via franchising. For more information, visit www.welcyon.com.
