At 84, Clementine leads an active life. Passionate about ballet, she regularly dons tights and leotard and heads to the dance studio to practice tendu, degage, and grande battement—just as she has for more than 40 years. When not dancing, she glides through a busy day of volunteering at her local library, ushering at a classical music venue, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. When she finally returns home, she retrieves her violin, and dives into one of Haydn’s string quartets—a ritual she’s practiced since she was a girl.
Always conscious that staying fit and active are keys to a long and happy life, Clementine had belonged to a health club for years. But despite faithful attendance at the gym and the studio, she worried that age might be taking a toll. In ballet, her movements were not as fluid as they once were, and her muscles grew strained and sore during her musical explorations with Haydn.

Aware of her concerns, her son, Joe, stumbled upon Welcyon while driving through Bloomington, a Minneapolis suburb not far from Clementine’s home. He was intrigued by posters promising that people over 50 could double their strength.

Clementine was immediately taken with the club’s friendly and welcoming environment. “During my first session, a bunch of the members interrupted their workouts to introduce themselves,” she said. Throughout her three orientation sessions, she worked one-on-one with a fitness coach who showed her how to use each piece of equipment, explained its benefits, and helped her develop a custom exercise program based on her goals and needs. She is pleased that the coaches continue to offer guidance, support and encouragement.
“The coaches say hello and goodbye each time I visit. I like Welcyon’s smaller size, too. That’s part of why Welcyon is a better fit for me than my old club.”

“It takes less effort for me to perform my ballet moves,” she observes, noting that she can now take on more difficult moves that would have been out of the question a year ago.
“I am also more limber, which makes it easier for me to play my violin.” Plus, with four times more strength in her biceps, and big increases in her upper body and core, she can maintain proper violin posture for longer periods and practice more comfortably.
The club also offers free workshops on a wide range of health-related topics, from heart health and stress management to nutrition and weight management. Clementine values the presentations and is adding them to her packed calendar.
“I’m glad that my son told me about Welcyon,” she said. “It’s more than a gym. It’s a community of people who care. And that’s what keeps me coming back.”
