What We Can Learn from Bob

January 2013

The latest Bobism: "Going to Welcyon is like going to the bank. It's an investment for now and for the future."

Fitness Coach Bob Nyberg is known for his wise words, but this message is especially important because it's based on experience. In October, Bob underwent total hip replacement surgery on his left side. To prepare, he continued his regular strength and cardio exercise routine at Welcyon. He remembers walking into his pre-op meeting and encountering other patients who didn't exercise. "I saw some people and I thought, 'How are they going to do this? They really haven't prepared.'"

Bob is the first to admit that it was a challenging surgery and says it's been a process. At the same time, he credits regular workouts at Welcyon for speeding up and easing his recovery. "It's like I always say, 'Exercise doesn't lie. If you put in the time, you'll see the benefits.'"

It won't be long before Bob ditches his cane and steps back onto the standing elliptical. He's already trading barbs with members and kidding around as usual. Some might even call him a wise guy. And when you consider all of his sage advice, it's easy to agree.

Wimpy or Solid Handshake: How Strong is Your Grip?!

October 2012

Welcyon now offers grip strength testing. Why? Grip strength is a reflection of the strength of muscles throughout your body. If a person is weak, generally, it is a reflection of decreased physical activity, either from poor lifestyle habits or the result of serious disease or illness. Research also shows that grip strength can predict a number of important things including how strong (or weak) someone is years later in life, the ability to perform activities of daily living, and the risk of becoming disabled.

The grip strength test is quick and easy to do. Your fitness coach will ask you to squeeze a device as hard as you can, 3 times, with your dominant and non-dominant hands. Your strength scores are then compared to people of your gender and age. If you have a weak grip, then you have a great opportunity to improve your strength and fitness level via the Welcyon way. If you are strong, use your Welcyon membership to make sure you maintain your strength. Squeeze away!

They Were Right!

May 2011

I’m not sure from whom you heard it first, your mother, your grandmother, your grade school teacher; maybe all of them told you emphatically, “Sit up straight! Don’t slouch!” Now an occasional slouch is just fine. What they were hoping to prevent is a habit of slouching that could lead to bad posture. And, it turns out they were right.
