The single most effective way to slow the rate of aging, reduce and prevent chronic illness, and stay independent is physical exercise. Our programming is designed by physical therapist, Mark Richards, M.P.T., who has more than 30 years of experience working with people over 50. Protocols for workouts follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines. Our air-driven equipment, which is designed for aging adults, is simple to use and easy on joints. Welcyon also uses special Smart Card technology that sets your personalized weight load and tracks your progress.
Strengthen: to build muscle mass
Strong muscles help you move safely and easily so you can maintain the activities you enjoy—walking, biking, playing with grandchildren, and living independently. Muscle strength also preserves bone density and improves balance at any age.
Aerobic: to improve cardiovascular performance
Feeling tired or having little energy is linked to inactivity. Regular aerobic exercise increases your ability to take in and use oxygen, which then produces energy and increases stamina. It also reduces the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.
Balance: to stand strong and prevent falls
Welcyon has unique balance training programs and equipment designed to improve muscle strength, stamina, flexibility, and good sensory feedback. Improvement in one or more areas may lead to a significant reduction in the risk of falling.
Flexibility: to improve posture and joint motion
The Welcyon flexibility exercises are designed to improve posture. Good posture when standing and walking also helps prevent falls.
Nutrition: to plan a healthy and balanced diet
Welcyon pairs you with a Registered Dietitian to create a personalized nutrition and meal plan. Ongoing counseling is also provided to help you achieve your weight and nutrition goals, because only a combination of regular exercise and healthy eating can help you be your best.
Social: to increase happiness by connecting with others
Welcyon gives you a sense of belonging. There is a space devoted to sharing a cup of coffee with a buddy, playing cards, or trying out a puzzle. Welcyon even offers book club and events.
"Several major research studies have considered the numerous factors that seem to predict the need for eventual institutionalization, and, lack of leg strength was found to be the single most important predictor. Not blood pressure, or heart disease, or diabetes, or arthritis…but, rather, leg strength. The lesson is clear. If you want to avoid the nursing home, you'd better take good care of your legs."
