Leaving the Big Bad Gym Behind

For most people, the torn earth, poured concrete and rebar of a new construction project might seem an unlikely spot for a personal-fitness epiphany. But as Ray Littlefield sat in traffic beside the site of a future Welcyon club in Burnsville, something about that “Fitness After 50” sign really resonated.

“Until then, I had not made health a priority,” said Littlefield, who just turned 50 in September. “Stress and lifestyle have taken their toll.” Often working 60 hours a week for a Twin Cities software firm, the busy sales executive grapples with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and extra weight. “I’ve got a one-year-old grandchild, and I want to be around to watch him grow up. I realized I needed to make some changes.”
