Why did you decide to open a Welcyon, Fitness After 50, health club?

I was at a dinner party and we were talking about how there aren’t health clubs in Boise for adults 50 and over. I did the research, discovered Welcyon and was so impressed with the way it has helped adults 50-plus measurably improve their health and concluded that this is exactly what we need here in Boise.

What excites you most about opening your club?

Lots of people my age recognize the need to take better care of ourselves, but traditional gyms aren’t always the answer. Those gyms can be oversized, overcrowded and overwhelming. Many of us need – and want! – a place like Welcyon – a smaller, welcoming place with friendly staff, personalized service and equipment that’s easier yet just as effective to use.

My club is filling a need in our town, and through it I’m going to be able to help so many people rediscover strength, energy and vitality in their second half of life. It’s not just a business for me, it’s personally rewarding to be able to help and give back.

What type of an experience should a member expect?

There’s something special about walking in the door, being greeted by name and taken through a workout by a professional who is totally focused on YOU. That’s what I’m bringing to my community – an experience you typically can’t get at a traditional gym, designed specifically for adults over 50.

And it’s not just not about exercise, we’ll offer a holistic wellness and social experience. Every member is paired with a registered dietician to create a healthy meal plan and receive year-round counseling because, let’s face it, a healthier life isn’t just about staying active, it’s also about what you eat. And we’ll host Wellness Workshops featuring outside speakers on topics like nutrition, sleep and meditation to stimulate ideas for healthier living.

We’ll have a calendar of social events to help our members connect and make this feel like a home away from home. In fact, our lounge area – with a fireplace, large screen TV, water wall and comfortable leather seating – will be a great place to relax before or after a workout.

The response in other towns where Welcyon has a club has been terrific. Satisfaction scores are off the charts. I can’t wait to deliver that same experience right here in Boise.

Who is likely to join your club?

Adults over 50, obviously – with three common denominators. First, our members want to make their health a priority. Either they’re in pretty good shape and want to maintain it, or they realize they need to do something to start improving right now.

Second, many of our members will be those who frankly are turned off by traditional gyms. They’re displeased with the service, the size, the intimidation factor and prefer something more personalized and “intimate,” if I can use such a word to describe a health club. They appreciate that this is a club only for people like them – no muscle shirts, no spandex, no kids running around. Just adults over 50 enjoying an oasis of health and wellness, even if it’s only for an hour here and there.

And third, it’s all about location. Many members will choose us because we’re nearby and easy to get to. They don’t have to go far to make time for themselves.

What roots do you have in the area?

My husband Ray and I have lived in Boise for 23 years and raised our two sons here. The club will also be a mile from my home so my members will be my neighbors.

What’s your background?

I spent 30 years working in the mortgage lending industry while also owning a real estate and property management company with my husband until retiring four years ago. In retirement I started working with non-profits, particularly with services that help women and children who had been physically and emotionally abused. These experiences have underscored for me again the importance of giving back, and it’s made me a better person.

Welcyon’s concept spoke to my desire to give back to the community. As I watch my friends and family struggle with the physical aspects of aging, I think it’s important they have a place they can go to get strong and healthy. Having seen the heart-moving success stories of people whose lives have been changed at other Welcyon clubs, that was enough to convince me that this is where I want to be at this point of my life – in my community, serving others with a business that brings me personal purpose and fulfillment.

What else should Boise know about you?

I was born in Grand Forks, ND, and got my bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. After living in Cincinnati, San Diego and Minneapolis, my husband of 23 years, Ray, and I settled in Boise 22 years ago. We raised our two sons here. Our oldest son Ryan spent eight years as a Navy diver and is now in college in Hawaii. Our youngest son Brandan is also in college, but a little closer to home at the University of Utah.

When we’re not working, my husband and I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing and rafting with family and friends. Boise is a great place to live if you love the outdoors because you can golf in the morning, then go skiing in the mountains in the afternoon.
