When her blood pressure ran high and her energy ran low, Judy Colegrove decided to get off the couch and back into a life of health, fitness and vitality.
For 35 years, Judy Colegrove was on the move. As a manager for K-Mart, she hopped from state-to-state, and store-to-store, getting new shops up and running, and helping struggling ones back on their feet. Though the hours were long and the pace was frantic, she loved her job. So when the 69-year-old empty nester retired, life seemed glacially slow—especially when the Nevada sun blazed hot.
“When it’s 110 degrees outside, it’s easier to just sit in and watch TV,” Judy said. But the less she did, the more lethargic she felt. Even cleaning the house became a monumental chore. She was just too tired. As her activity level plunged, Judy put on weight and her blood pressure soared.
I joined one of those big gyms. It was beautiful and had everything—except the kind of attention I needed. When it comes down to it, they’re not trained or equipped to help older adults. That’s why I left.
“So I joined one of those big gyms. It was beautiful and had everything—except the kind of attention I needed. If you can’t afford $75 an hour for a trainer, you don’t get looked at. And if you have a question about the machines—forget about it. When it comes down to it, they’re not trained or equipped to help older adults. That’s why I left.”
Searching for a new gym, she chanced upon a Facebook ad for Welcyon. The moment Judy walked into the club she felt at home. “This is exactly what I’m looking for,” she recalled. “It was the perfect atmosphere. I just felt comfortable there.”
From the friendly and knowledgeable staff to the high-tech, easy-to-use strength and cardio equipment, everything was tailored for a personalized experience. Judy joined on the spot. In fact, she has the distinction of being the Henderson’s club very first member. Since then, she’s been working out several times a week.
The coaches [at Welcyon] are amazing. They listen and respond to your concerns. If I have a question while I’m in the middle of my circuit, they’ll drop everything and come over to help.
“Now I get up in the morning and I’m ready to go. I really don’t think of it as a gym. You walk in the door and everyone calls you by name. And that’s a rare thing these days. The coaches are amazing. They listen and respond to your concerns. If I have a question while I’m in the middle of my circuit, they’ll drop everything and come over to help.”
Of course, the biggest benefit is the way she feels. For the first time since retiring, she is ready to embrace the possibilities of her new life.
“I come home from the club full of energy to take on the day. And now I want to keep it going further.” Anticipating the birth of her first great grandson in August, she plans to be an active, vibrant presence in his life.
“I want to put him in the stroller, take him to the park, and push him on the swings. I want to carry him and play with him. I’m not going to be a little old woman watching him from the bench.”
But her ambitions don’t stop at the local playground. Fondly remembering the many camping and hiking trips that she, her two boys, and now late-husband Bob took to the Grand Canyon and other National Parks, Judy is dusting off her boots, and planning new adventures.
“We are still a camping and four-wheeling family. So I’m working on getting enough stamina to walk far distances again. Activity builds activity; the more you do, the more you can do. If I’m feeling this good after only a few weeks, imagine where I’ll be in a year.”
