The Best Health Club for Adults Over 50

A Better Way to Train Over 50

Welcyon, Fitness After 50, Coming to Boise

EDINA, Minn. – Boise will soon be home to the newest Welcyon, Fitness After 50, location – a health club where adults over 50 can comfortably lace up their sneakers to work toward their specific fitness goals.

The new club will open at BRC Plaza,12505 W. Chinden Blvd, in the coming months and promises a better experience and healthier results than traditional gyms, citing its specially trained staff, safer user-friendly equipment and personalized workout and nutrition plans – all delivered in a smaller, comfortable setting that contrasts with oversized, overcrowded big-box gyms.

This will be Welcyon’s first club in the Boise metro area and sixth overall, and among the first to showcase an all-new interior décor package that features a more spa-like ambiance.

“There are many adults in their 50s and beyond who want to live healthier, but traditional gyms don’t offer the direction, support and sense of community they are looking for at this stage in their lives,” said Welcyon co-founder Suzy Boerboom. “We anxiously look forward to providing local residents a place that’s a better fit, a place where they can get stronger, leaner, re-energized and feel the best they have in years.”

The new club in Boise will be owned and operated by Bonnie Kirby, a former Wells Fargo mortgage lender who discovered her passion of working with people during years of non-profit work after retirement.

As a baby boomer herself, Kirby has observed and experienced the lack of accommodation when it comes to fitness for her generation. “Many of my friends and family in Boise are boomers and I couldn’t help but notice the lack of a fitness facility that could tailor to their specific needs,” said Kirby. “I want these people I care about to be given the opportunity to improve and maintain their health and strength.”

At Welcyon, members are paired with a fitness coach and registered dietician at no extra cost, and work from a specially tailored exercise and nutrition roadmap for better health.

Workouts are guided on unique, strength-training equipment that uses air instead of weight stacks to create resistance, build strength and minimize the risk of injury. The equipment is also powered by Smart Card technology that pre-programs each member’s prescribed workout into every machine. Each machine greets the member by name, sets the resistance, counts reps and adjusts the workouts, making them progressively more challenging as the member improves.

“You see results faster, and sustain them, by combining smart exercise with healthy eating,” Kirby added, noting that Welcyon members on average improve their strength by 50 percent within three months, double it within a year and show marked improvement in other areas such as weight loss and better control of chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

The club also features an area for social activities and wellness workshops covering such topics as healthy eating, brain fitness and better sleep.

Founding memberships – which guarantee a reduced, locked-in lifetime rate – are available to the first 50 joiners. For more information, contact the club at (208) 409-7626 or, or visit
