The Best Health Club for Adults Over 50

A Better Way to Train Over 50

Welcyon, Fitness After 50, to Open in Henderson

EDINA, Minn. – Welcyon, Fitness After 50, a Minneapolis-based chain of health clubs specially designed for adults over 50, has signed a franchise agreement to open in Henderson. The new club will open this spring in Anthem Village Plaza.

Welcyon offers a personalized approach to fitness that combines strength, cardio and nutrition coaching. Research has shown that members, on average, double their strength within a year.

“We are thrilled to announce our expansion in Henderson,” said Suzy Boerboom, co-founder and CEO of Welcyon. “We’re here because the fitness industry generally hasn’t served people over 50 very well, and we have a game-changing product that is helping them measurably improve their health and add years of healthy, active aging to their lives.”

The Henderson club will be owned and operated by Dr. Mark Severino and his wife Suzanne. Mark, previously a medical director and reproductive endocrinologist at Red Rock Fertility in Las Vegas, and Suzanne, a former fitness trainer who later worked as an embryologist with her husband, wanted to continue their careers of helping people live healthier. After exploring other fitness concepts, they chose Welcyon because they believe it fills a gap in addressing the needs of the 50+ market while providing a seamless extension of their dedicated medical careers.

“Welcyon seemed like a perfect fit because it’s more like a wellness center than a fitness center,” said Mark. “As we age, working out and maintaining muscle is vitally important to overall health. Yet here in Las Vegas, so many older people are intimidated by gyms filled with young showgirls and muscle heads. Welcyon is dedicated to helping people age actively with good health, so they can enjoy their lives; and that really fits with our healthcare upbringing.”

“Throughout our careers, we have always noticed the lack of health clubs that cater to adults over 50,” said Suzanne. “Welcyon seemed like the best fit for us. It targets a hot demographic we relate to, fills a gap in the health club industry, and taps a large market in our backyard. Here in Vegas, we have a huge retirement population with many age-restricted communities.”

At Welcyon, members are paired with a fitness coach and registered dietitian, and work from a specially tailored exercise and nutrition roadmap for better health.

Workouts are guided on unique, strength-training equipment that uses air instead of weight stacks to create resistance, build strength and minimize the risk of injury. The equipment is also powered by Smart Card technology that pre-programs each member’s prescribed workout into every machine. Each machine greets the member by name, sets the resistance, counts reps and adjusts the workouts, making them progressively more challenging as the member improves.

“People have a perception of what a gym looks like,” Boerboom added. “To them, it’s a big, loud place full of people in tight leotards and muscles bulging from their tank shirts. Welcyon is way outside that paradigm.”

Welcyon clubs are characterized by a warm, sophisticated décor that features soft lighting, earth-tone colors and natural elements like a water wall to create a relaxing, spa-like ambiance. Social activities and wellness workshops on topics such as brain fitness and better sleep complement the fitness and nutrition coaching.

Boerboom says the Las Vegas area can potentially support up to five Welcyon locations. For more information, visit welcyon.com.
